New Hi-Definition Open MRI Magnet Arrives in Mt. Pleasant
September 27, 2011
Mt. Pleasant, Michigan ― Standing eight feet tall, eight feet wide and eight feet long, a 1.2 Tesla, high definition open MRI magnet, weighing 17 tons ― roughly the weight of three male elephants ― was hoisted into its new location at Open MRI Mt. Pleasant on Crapo Street on Tuesday, Sept. 27.
The magnet was carefully lifted by a crane and lowered through a skylight in the roof of the Crapo Professional Building at 211 S. Crapo Street. With the magnet in place, the room will now be sealed, the interior of the suite finished and installation of the MRI device completed.
The 1.2 Tesla magnet has a pull equal to 24,000 times the strength of the earth's magnetic field. The room housing the magnet is specially shielded, encased in steel and copper, to decrease the effect of the magnet on surrounding rooms.
Installation of the magnet is a key step in the construction of this new business venture, designed to provide a more comfortable, affordable option for magnetic resonance imaging.
Open MRI Mt. Pleasant is now accepting appointment requests and will begin seeing patients October 31. The public is invited to tour the facility at the grand opening and ribbon cutting on November 1.
